September 2016 Wrap Up

The month of September wasn't a very good reading month for me. I knew I had a lot on my plate and I wasn't going to be able going to be able to read my entire TBR, but I did expect to read more than one of the books on it. So I was a very bad reader this month. Not to make excuses, but I did do some reading I just forgot about some prior commitments I had made for September and I needed to get through those before I could move onto my TBR. So here are the four books I read in the month of September!

These Shallow Graves
By: Jennifer Donnelly

It has been awhile since I've read a standalone book. This was a historical murder mystery with the main character's father being killed and her trying to prove it was murder with a young dashing reporter while trying to maintain the double life of detective and fine lady about to enter society.
I quite enjoyed this book, while I was never fully engrossed in it, it did hold my attention. The pacing was done well and the many twists and turns at times seem predictable, but some seem to throw you for a twist. If you are looking for a great historical murder mystery to read this definitely fits the bill. Full review to come, but I do recommend you check out this book!

A Bond of Venom and Magic
By: Karen Tomlinson

I was sent this book as an e-ARC by the author in return for an honest review. This book was a good start to the series for debut author Karen Tomlinson. While this wasn't one of those books where I couldn't put it down, it has the makings for a good series. The pacing was a bit like a teenager first learning to drive, speeding fast and then coming to an abrupt halt. It seemed a bit jerky to me, but it has some action as well as romance so there is something everyone can enjoy. The world built in this book was a bit confusing at times and never fully explained, but the history that was mentioned really intrigued me and I can't wait to learn more about it. My e-ARC review will be up soon and my full review will be out when the book is published. Need an introductory book to fantasy? Then this one is for you.

Pride and Prejudice
By: Jane Austen

This book is an all time favourite of mine and every time I read it I fall in love with all over again. I have only read a few "classics" but this is the only one I've truly enjoyed. I particularly love how at the beginning you think you know who is proud and who is prejudiced, but then they become interchangable between the characters.  It is hard to believe that this book was written so long ago but still has real world relevance in today's world. I will put my full thoughts in the review that will come shortly. But if you haven't read this book yet I most definitely recommend that you do! Or at least go and watch the movies. Can someone please send me my own Mr. Darcy?

The Light Fantastic
By: Sarah Combs

I am working with Candlewick Press for this review as they kindly contacted me about giving an honest review for this book in return for them sending me a copy. I have to say that this book really surprised me. It made me feel happy, sad, intrigued, downright scared and confused. There is a trigger warning for this book as it does deal with suicidal thoughts and school shootings. To me this especially hit hard because I am a member of the younger generation who have had to go through drills in cased of a school shooting. School shootings have sadly become a part of everyday life and this book deals with a school shooting from multiple people's perspectives across the US. I didn't like everything about this book but I definitely think this is a topic that needs to be talked about more and I think everybody should be reading this book if only to stimulate conversation on the topic. My full review will be posted soon for this book.

Now I have a week off of work at the beginning of October so I'm hoping to dash through some of my books on my October TBR and maybe go back and read a few that I missed from September as well. At least I stand more of a chance with some time off from work. We will have to see though! Wish me luck.
